چکیده
Aquifers are increasingly stressed. Managed aquifer recharge provides a potential solution to mitigate this stress and provide sustainable groundwater resources. Subsurface properties known have strong control on the infiltration rates that can be achieved. However, these often highly heterogeneous difficult assess with conventional probing techniques. Here, we show application of 3D geophysical imaging its variation across several basins used for managed recharge. We link in-situ measurements saturated hydraulic conductivity electrical resistivity subsurface establish petrophysical relationships use those estimate distribution throughout five basins. Our results considerable variability in properties, i.e., soil texture conductivity, direct impact rates. property distributions model estimates volumes, approach management activities performance. Having such data not only enables us predict rates, but also means optimizing water infrastructure.

Economics of Managed Aquifer Recharge
Managed aquifer recharge (MAR) technologies can provide a variety of water resources management benefits by increasing the volume of stored water and improving water quality through natural aquifer treatment processes. Implementation of MAR is often hampered by the absence of a clear economic case for the investment to construct and operate the systems. Economic feasibility can be evaluated usi...
متن کاملGeochemical Triggers of Arsenic Mobilization during Managed Aquifer Recharge.
Mobilization of arsenic and other trace metal contaminants during managed aquifer recharge (MAR) poses a challenge to maintaining local groundwater quality and to ensuring the viability of aquifer storage and recovery techniques. Arsenic release from sediments into solution has occurred during purified recycled water recharge of shallow aquifers within Orange County, CA. Accordingly, we examine...
متن کاملPolicy and Economics of Managed Aquifer Recharge and Water Banking
Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) and water banking are of increasing importance to water resources management. MAR can be used to buffer against drought and changing or variable climate, as well as provide water to meet demand growth, by making use of excess surface water supplies and recycled waters. Along with hydrologic and geologic considerations, economic and policy analyses are essential to...
متن کاملSpatial and temporal infiltration dynamics during managed aquifer recharge.
Natural groundwater recharge is inherently difficult to quantify and predict, largely because it comprises a series of processes that are spatially distributed and temporally variable. Infiltration ponds used for managed aquifer recharge (MAR) provide an opportunity to quantify recharge processes across multiple scales under semi-controlled conditions. We instrumented a 3-ha MAR infiltration po...
